It makes a great deal of sense, in retrospect, that my attraction to paint follows my lifelong inability to isolate one favorite color. Watching colors come together and transform themselves into new colors is a satisfying aspect of painting, in and of itself. The arrangement of these colors, and resulting transformation of paint into recognizable imagery, is the other magical aspect of painting. I find both to be endlessly compelling. I paint despite my introduction to art by my illustrator father, whose incredible patience for detail has not only escaped me entirely, but has done more to drive me towards impulsiveness and spontaneity. A number of years of my life were spent as a professional glass artist in the 1980’s. Although I greatly enjoyed the design and construction of architectural flat glass, I especially appreciate the infinite design and color freedom afforded by painting mediums. My most comfortable painting zone is in the “sanctuary” of my studio, surrounded by painting materials and books. I seek out guidance, inspiration, and encouragement from a variety of sources as needed. The books I go to most often, such as the works of Sargent, Sorolla, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Fechin, Bongart, and others, are the same inspiring ones that have found their way into countless other artists' collections. A long-term goal is to someday absorb even a fraction of what I see in these sources, and have it emerge from the tip of my paintbrush. I have received instruction and encouragement from artists including Ted Pankowski, Frank Serrano, Nancy Chaboun, Carolyn Anderson, Michelle Usibelli, Brian Blood, and others. I enjoy painting still life, portraits, and landscapes. Variety in subject matter, places, and colors, freshen my perception and stimulate my interest. Right now, my artistic goal is to follow where the colors and shapes lead me, and hope that whatever emerges has a life of its own. Shows and Exhibits
